It was a lovely Saturday morning when a couple of us decided to partake in the Frederick Women’s Distance Festival 5K this past weekend. It was a small, local race for us which made it all the more enticing.
Spoiler alert: I would totally do this race again. It was inexpensive and not too far from home which are both a huge plus in my book. From the day we signed up I was impressed with the whole operation.
They regularly sent email updates about the race. Packet pick up was offered only on Thursday night, but they also had race day packet pick up, so we decided to just get there a little early to take care of that. The race was limited to 500 participants which I’ve come to appreciate after running some of the much larger races like Rock ‘n’ Roll. They had a nice tech t-shirt and swag bag with a variety of goodies from some of the local businesses and sponsors. It was near the college in Frederick, MD so they had use of the gym which meant real bathrooms, huzzah! They even turned the men’s room into a women’s room so we didn’t have huge lines. well played FWDF!
It was an easy two loop, mostly flat course. I hadn’t raced in a while, so wasn’t sure what my body would do, but I impressed myself and came out with a pretty good time. They had watermelon and ice cream at the finish along with the usual bananas, bagels, chocolate milk and even some cookies. It was a really nice spread for such a small, local race. They even had raffles and a vendor onsite with some great Maryland gear which we quickly purchased, because duh, we needed stuff with the Maryland flag on it. There was plenty of parking right next to everything so you didn’t even need to check a bag. It was just really well planned and went off without a hitch. They even had a little lady mini course for the kids beforehand which is always fun to watch.
